The Chameleon
The Chameleon Interested in observing our contemporary globalizing world that demands comparative approaches to culture and societies yet not knowing how to interact in reach of positive “effectivity”; Intrigued of analyzing psycho-existential complex that features cultural diversity, issues of power and conflict. The Chameleon is a second part of visual story telling concerning the migration phenomena. The project recently started, focuses on second-generation migrants and their individual path to social integration. The aim is to carry an analysis based on the understanding of the various aspects that influence the development of integrated and socially active subjects in a diverse melting pot as NYC. A metropolis where cultures combine and divide at the same time. The City is often referred to collectively as the Five Boroughs; the term is used to refer to New York as a whole in an unambiguous way, despite the fact that inside it sees areas that are clearly delimited and distinguished by communities that over time have established themselves with different customs, food, shops and languages. In this environment, is coexistence and integration within the reach of all? Can we talk about minorities? What factors determine social exclusion or inclusion? How can we redeem ourselves from being part of a hierarchical scale that still exists in our contemporary society? What promotes cohesion? What allows you to overcome as an individual? The narrative will collect multi-media research material: portraits, short films and interviews where individuals will be the spokespersons of their experience. The goal is to collect testimonials that will allow me to compose a historical, social and psychological picture of what it means to grow and live in the midst of more cultural identities.Starting from the latin community, specifically the Dominican population, the two subjects are a reflection of different ways of approaching to the outside world. What does “The Street” symbolically stand for? A place where everything happens, a territory that one feels belonging too, that one stands up to delimit it’s borders and mark it’s property; a safe space, a bridge of connection from a world to another, an essential passage, a starting point of connections too other worlds... How does “The Street” influence the being part of a society as a whole and how each individually overcomes or undergoes the impact of stereotypically being identified as part of a “minority”.The selected images conceptually embrace all of these questions trying to open different tracks of analysis and understanding.

The Chameleon
The Chameleon “Whats poppin’?” is the first thing he says when catching up.Born in 1995, originally from DR, he moved to NYC as a young boy with his family. As a teenager he started being extremely fascinated to gangs observing the moves around his block. We spent a whole night talking about the history of Afro-American and Latin gangs. The way he speaks, the words he chooses are an immediate Identity kit to his street belongings : The Crips.O graduated from college in 2018 but he is struggling in starting off with his professional life. The block, his block, is his everyday life. The street is home and his friends are family.Together they make sure all is good around Kingsbridge. Once you are in, you are safe.
